100% natural leather

Elegance is an exquisite type of leather of the finest quality European oxhide. It has an exclusive and natural look and is soft and pleasant to the touch. Elegance is aniline leather and is chrome tanned but then subsequently vegetable tanned, which gives the leather greater firmness. This type of leather has a natural and raw surface, allowing the leather to breathe and offers excellent sitting comfort as well as a feeling of exclusivity.

The leather is full grain, which means that its natural surface structure has been preserved and all natural markings are visible. Natural markings are the hallmarks of the animal’s active life and give the piece of furniture a unique sense of character. Elegance leather varies in colour from hide to hide and acquires a beautiful, lighter patina with use and exposure to sunlight.

The H55 pattern has been designed in 1955 by Elissa Aalto, second wife of Alvar Aalto.

For Aino and Alvar Aalto, fabrics were an integral element of domestic life and played a crucial role in Artek's design philosophy from its earliest days to the present. Aino Aalto originally discovered the classic Zebra fabric during her European travels and incorporated it in Artek interiors as early as the 1930s.

Characterized by a soft, sensual feel and striking visual depth, the Zebra fabric brings a touch of the wild to any interior. Today the wool and cotton based Zebra fabric is manufactured in Germany, woven exclusively for Artek.

In music, tonika is the keynote in a scale, a note where you feel “at home” because the melody in the mode concerned often ends on tonika. This feeling is elegantly transferred to the upholstery Tonica, which exactly expresses something safe and comfortable.

In 2000, Kvadrat presented Tonica, a mixed woolen fabric which retains its look and feel even during hard everyday wear in offices. The main requirement of Tonica was to obtain a blend in the surface of the fabric while retaining the solid colour expression, so that you get a clear and vivid colour shadowed with black. The colours of Tonica are created, by doing both a light grey and a dark grey mélange in the same 14 colours. This produces 14 light and 14 dark mélange colours in Tonica.

Sunniva 2 is the result of a collaboration between Raf Simons, a Belgian couturier with a minimalist style who, since 2012, runs the department of haute couture at Dior, and Fanny Aronsen, famous Swedish textile designer. Dominated by wool, Sunniva 2 offers both a nice material and a pleasant feel. With excellent resistance to both wear (Martindale 50000) and light, it is suitable for both private and public spaces.

Kvadrat’s first textile

Hallingdal

has become the archetype of woollen textiles. The very durable upholstery fabric was originally designed in 1965 by Nanna Ditzel. Hallingdal 65 is made of wool and viscose: the wool provides excellent durability and flexibility, whilst the viscose adds brilliance and depth to the colour. Both materials are dyed before they are spun, which highlights the rich texture of the fabric.

The fabric comes in 58 colourways: some are unicoloured, others are constructed from 2 different unicoloured yarns, and the rest are created using unicoloured yarns in combination with melange yarns. Many of the colours are drawn from the original colour scale, including the 22 new shades, which have been ‘rediscovered’. The versatile palette includes neutral and strong, primary colours, as well as the designer’s favourite hues: turquoise and pink.

Tonus 4 is an elastic upholstery fabric by late textile artist Nina Koppel. Ideal for modern organic furniture and characterised by rare colour richness, it comes in a total of 47 hues.

Tonus brings colours to life in vibrant, precise fashion. Building on this characteristic, the intensity and brightness of all the colours have been increased. The new earthy, golden tones in the palette are taken from Nina Koppel’s original colour archive. They show her brilliant sense of colour, which reflects that she mastered all facets of the colour design from the warm tones associated with spices and Oriental mysticism, to the cooler Nordic aquamarine colours.

Steelcut Trio

features an innovative weave, which gives the fabric a three-dimensional surface resembling small pyramids or steel points and, despite the complexity of the weave, a simple and precise expression. The difference between Steelcut Trio and Steelcut lies in the way they are coloured. Unlike Steelcut, Steelcut Trio is yarn-dyed and made from 3 differently coloured yarns, often with very bright tones on the warp and lighter tones on the weft. This combination not only accentuates the three dimensional character of the weave, it also adds life to the fabric: though it looks unicoloured from a distance, different shades are revealed as the viewer gets nearer.

Remix

is a woolen upholstery fabric, created by the acclaimed Italian designer Giulio Ridolfo. It is made from melange yarns, with each thread consisting of three different colours. For each colourway, two different threads are used. The result is irregular colours playing across the surface of the fabric. It is available in many colours, ranging from burnt reds and oranges, dusty blues and greens and subtle charcoal tones to natural shades of yellow, beige and sand.

Hella Jongerius re-interpretation
For the collection of the 401 armchair, Hella Jongerius combined structured fabrics to create a colour blocking effect. The combination of the two coloured pieces and a third fabric covering the back breaks up the long lines of the 401. This creates a fresh and playful take on upholstery, marking the beginning of a new, fruitful collaboration.
