Inga Sempé
Inga Sempé is a French designer born in Paris in 1968, whose work is known for its light, playful and poetic touch. Daughter of the famous cartoonist of the same name and Mette Ivers, a Danish-born illustrator who worked on the "J'aime Lire" series, Inga Sempé turned to design at an early age.
After studying design at the École nationale supérieure de création industrielle, Inga Sempé began her career working with the team of Australian designer Marc Newson (Hermés, Vuitton, Montblanc). Between 1997 and 1999, she joined the agency of the famous designer Andrée Putman. She then spent a year as a resident at Villa Médicis, before embarking on a collaboration with Cappellini.
Italian architecture and stationery became a formidable source of inspiration for the artist, who subsequently sought to work with fluting and folding, as seen in some of her flagship creations (the paper lamp that brought her work to the attention of Cappellini, Hay's MATIN collection). She then set up her own agency in Paris, and in 2002 was awarded the Grand Prix du design de la ville de Paris. The following year, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs devoted an exhibition to her. In 2007, she received the German Red Dot Design Award, and in 2012, she was named Designer of the Year in Stockholm.
Today, Inga Sempé works with numerous brands including Hay, Ligne Roset and Baccarat. Some of her creations are included in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou, the National Museum in Stockholm and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
