&Tradition, Danish Design Furniture & Lighting

An evolution of the classic Little Petra by Danish designer Viggo Boesen, created in 1938, &Tradition introduces the Petra lounge chair, a lounge seat with a high back.

The Little Petra armchair was designed in 1938 for the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition. Found in Boesen's archives, rolled up in a dust-covered cigar box, the original sketches had been invisible for decades.

The Petra armchair brings new proportions to this historic piece. It has the same bold character and aesthetic, but its more enveloping shape is perfectly suited to activities such as reading, conversation or watching a film.

Els Van Hoorebeeck, Creative Director at &Tradition: "We're delighted to welcome this new variant to the family.

The launch of Petra was a true labor of love, capturing the spirit of Viggo Boesen's original creation while infusing it with our unique design perspective.

The Petra armchair pays homage to history while embracing the present, making it a coveted element of both classic and contemporary interiors."

Viggo Boesen

Viggo Boesen

Viggo Boesen is a relatively little-known architect who made a significant contribution to the development of Danish design in the 1930s. His work reflects the Scandinavian "Funkis" style, a Nordic interpretation of Art Deco.

Far from the mass-production, less-is-more approach of the Bauhaus school of thought, Boesen's soft, warm and almost naïve design renewed the aesthetics of upholstered furniture.

Only a few of his designs were ever produced, but his original ideas, organic forms and aesthetic vocabulary nourished the creations of Danish modernism over the following decades.
