The light and stackable VLA26 Vega Chair was now only found in the halls of the Vega Concert Hall in Copenhagen. Now it is available to a wide audience thanks to its production by Carl Hansen & Søn in partnership with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2022.
Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894-1984), internationally renowned architect, pioneer of Danish functionalism, designed revolutionary buildings, modernist masterpieces, in which everything was thought out down to the smallest detail â from the building itself to the chairs and tables through door handles, friezes, light fixtures and even electrical outlets.
Among these works, the Vega concert hall for which he designed the Vega chair. Built in 1956, the hall was called Folkets Hus (the People's House) and was to be a universal meeting place for the labor movement. The building was transformed into a concert hall in 1996 after extensive restoration.
Vilhelm Lauritzen's attention to detail is reflected in the VLA26 Vega stacking chair, an elegant mix of steel, wood and textile or leather. The precise upholstery of the seat and back gives the chair a light and refined appearance. The chair is also offered without upholstery for more compactness, highlighting the tactile oak. The dynamic curve of the backrest and the steel legs finished in wood give the chair great elegance.

Vilhelm Lauritzen
Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894â1984) is one of the most significant architects in the history of Denmark; he was the trail-blazing figurehead of Danish functionalism. A number of his buildings â Nørrebro Theatre (1931â32), Daells Varehus department store (1928â35), Radiohuset (1936-41) and the first airport built in Kastrup (1937â39) â represented the concentrated essence of contemporary life. Other significant buildings to stem from Lauritzenâs drawing board include Folkets Hus (1953â56) better known today as the Vega concert venue, the Shellhuset (1950â51) building and the Danish embassy in Washington (1958â60). In particular the Radiohuset building and the earliest version of Kastrup Airport â both listed today â are considered peerless monuments to modernism in the European genre of construction.
Throughout his life, Vilhelm Lauritzen adhered to the principle that architecture is applied art â with equal emphasis on both âartâ and âappliedâ. âNo life without aestheticsâ was another one of Vilhelm Lauritzenâs firmly held beliefs.
