The MANTIS luminaire collection was created in 1951 by German designer Bernard Schottlander, whose work is based on the analysis of movement.

This analysis of movement is reflected in the construction of the Mantis lamps, whose shade oscillates at the end of a flexible metal rod, itself counterbalanced by a system of counterweights.

This system of pivots and counterweights, the flexible metal rods and the helicoidal, embossed aluminum shades give Mantis lamps a unique air of lightness and balance.

Bernard Schottlander was born in Germany in 1924, a country he fled in the late '30s to London, where he worked as a welder in the armaments industry.

When the war was over, he attended sculpture courses at Leeds College of Art and St John's Wood on a scholarship from the Anglo-French Art Center.

His background as a welder would influence all his future work, including his collection of Mantis lamps, inspired by Alexander Calder's work on mobiles.
