Originally designed to make use of surplus wooden shipping crates by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld in 1934, the iconic Crate collection has been relaunched as a Rietveld Originals x HAY collaboration.Â
Rietveld's ambition to create modern, functional and affordable furniture for the masses echoes HAY's core values, making the Crate collection an ideal fit for HAY.
"The Crate Chair is a wonderful example of a product designed by an architect who sought harmony between architecture and interior," says Rolf Hay, co-founder of HAY.Â
"It's hard to imagine anything closer to our core design values, as it was really Rietveld's mission to create a super informal, affordable and inclusive furniture range - taking an incredibly democratic approach to design, which of course fits HAY extremely well."

Gerrit Rietveld
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) is one of the greatest Dutch architects and furniture designers of all time. The son of a carpenter, Rietveld was trained as a cabinetmaker by his father before setting up his own workshop in 1917. In 1919 he embarked on a career as an architect and joined the 'De Stijl' movement, which helped define his progressive style.
Rietveld's avant-garde approach focused on adapting and adjusting architecture to people's lifestyles, constantly seeking harmony between architecture and interior. Among the most important pieces of furniture are the Red and Blue Chair, created in 1917, and the Zig Zag Chair, designed in 1934. Rietveld's mission to create well-designed, affordable furniture for the general public echoes HAY's values, resulting in a Rietveld Originals x HAY collaboration with the relaunch of its iconic 1934 box series.
