Tapio Wirkkala
A multi-talented genius, Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) is regarded as a major figure in modern Finnish industrial art. His wide repertoire included glass, furniture, sculpture, town planning, painting, graphics and even the design of banknotes for the Finnish Treasury.
While his international reputation grew and he exhibited all over the world, Tapio Wirkkala remained a recluse by nature. His favourite spot was so isolated in the depths of the Finnish forest that his prototypes had to be delivered to his hut by helicopter, as no car could reach it. Nature provided him with much-loved solitude and inspiration for the shapes he created for industry. Throughout his incredibly productive career, Tapio Wirkkala received numerous awards, including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, the Pro Finlandia Medal and the Prince Eugen Medal.
In 1946, Tapio Wirkkala won his first design prize in a competition sponsored by Iittala. This prize marked the beginning of a lifelong relationship that would influence both his career and the company. Tapio Wirkkala became Artistic Director of Iittala, and his unique artistic vision helped establish the company's worldwide reputation. Over the course of his career, this uniquely talented artist created more than four hundred glass objects for the company, many of which, such as the Ultima Thule and Tapio series, remain popular today.
