The famous bistro chair is still considered to be the world's most successful industrial product: it was with this chair that the history of modern furniture began. Its manufacture was based on a technique that was new at the time, the bending of solid wood, a technique that Michael Thonet perfected in the 1850s, making mass production possible.

To sell the chairs, Thonet came up with the ingenious idea of shipping 36 chairs in one cubic metre crates all over the world, which customers could assemble themselves on site. Characterised by its aesthetic clarity, this classic piece of furniture has been used in a wide variety of settings for over 150 years. The chair is manufactured in our Frankenberg factory.

Michael Thonet

With the invention of bentwood furniture, Michael Thonet laid the foundation stone for industrial production. He was born in 1796 in Boppard/Rhine, where he opened his own workshop in 1819. In 1842, Prince Metternich called him to Vienna. In 1849, together with his sons, he founded a company that quickly became a worldwide success and expanded rapidly. Over 865,000 bentwood chairs were produced every year in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia. Michael Thonet died in Vienna in 1871 and his sons took over the company. In the 1930s, Thonet focused on tubular steel furniture construction and technology, and soon became the world's largest manufacturer. The Second World War brought an abrupt end to the company: the factories in Eastern Europe were closed down. The factory in Frankenberg (Germany), founded in 1889, has been the company's headquarters and production site ever since.
