The famous Thonet 215 chair is an icon in the history of design, and with good reason: it was the very first piece of mass-produced furniture, year zero in the history of modern furniture.

It was born out of the development of a new technique: the bending of solid wood, perfected by Michael Thonet in the 1850s. This made it possible not only to mass-produce furniture, but also to deliver it easily: 36 dismantled chairs could be packed into a box of just one cubic metre, shipped around the world and assembled on site.

This aesthetically clear classic has been used for over a century and a half in a wide variety of contexts. It is a piece of furniture with exemplary durability, whose wood comes from sustainably managed forests and which is very easy to repair. These characteristics have earned it the German Sustainability Award in the "Design" category in 2021.

Michael Thonet

With the invention of bentwood furniture, Michael Thonet laid the foundation stone for industrial production. He was born in 1796 in Boppard/Rhine, where he opened his own workshop in 1819. In 1842, Prince Metternich called him to Vienna. In 1849, he and his sons founded a company that quickly became a worldwide success and expanded rapidly. Over 865,000 bentwood chairs were produced every year in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia. Michael Thonet died in Vienna in 1871, and his sons took over the company. In the 1930s, Thonet focused on tubular steel furniture construction and technology, and soon became the world's largest manufacturer. The Second World War brought an abrupt end to the company: the factories in Eastern Europe were closed down. The factory in Frankenberg (Germany), founded in 1889, has been the company's headquarters and production site ever since.
