The Shell Chairs by Charles and Ray Eames are among the major creations of the 20th century. Their organically shaped seat shells made of fiberglass, recycled plastic or metal wire can be combined with a wide variety of bases.
Until now reserved for large furnishing projects, the tall versions of the Shell Chairs family – the Eames Stools – are now launched by Vitra in collaboration with the Eames office.
The new models are available in medium and high versions, suitable for kitchen counters or high tables, and in the variants Fiberglass Stools, Plastic Stools RE and Wire Stools, with seat shells available in the corresponding material.
For both heights, the base is inspired by the classic four-legged base of the DSX chair and is available in black or chrome epoxy finish. A footrest ensures greater comfort and safety. The Eames Plastic Stools RE and Eames Wire Stools can also be used outdoors in certain variations.

Fabrics & Leathers
Fabric Price group 1 (F60)
Hopsak fabric

Checker fabric
Alexander Girard developed the Checker pattern in 1965, as part of his legendary redesign of Braniff International Airlines' visual identity. The checkerboard pattern is a perfect illustration of Girard's radical break with the traditional moderate aesthetic that characterized the industry at the time.
Leather Price group 1 (L20)
Standard leather
Vitra standard leather is a robust cowhide leather with a uniform grain, dyed and pigmented with graining. Wear-resistant and easy to maintain, it can also be used in office environments.
Leather Price group 2 (L50)
Premium F leather
Premium F leather is a relatively smooth cowhide leather with a flat grain and a slightly shiny surface. It is tinted and lightly pigmented. Premium F leather is treated with a tanning agent extracted from olive leaves and the entire production process uses the least hazardous chemicals in the smallest quantities possible. This semi-aniline leather with its pleasant softness comes from sustainable production.
Charles & Ray Eames
Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames left their mark on the history of 20th century design, of which they accompanied the transition to the stage of mass production by being part of the continuity of the work undertaken by Finnish architect designer Alvar Aalto.
In 1925, Charles Eames began studying architecture which he interrupted after two years of boredom. Four years later, he traveled to Europe where he enthusiastically discovered the innovative work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. Upon his return to the United States, he opened his own architectural practice and worked several times in association with the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. It was with Eliel's son, Eero Saarinen, that he won his first design prize, awarded by the Museum of Modern Art in New York following an organic design competition.
In 1938, encouraged by Eliel Saarinen, Charles Eames resumed his architectural studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts, where he quickly became a professor of industrial design. There he met Ray Kaiser, a painting student, who would become his assistant, then his wife, in 1941.
The couple settled in California, in Venice, where they created various film sets for the MGM studio. It was in this context that they developed their technique of molding and bending plywood, drawing on the technical innovations of Alvar Aalto. In 1942, during World War II, the US Navy subsidized them to further develop their know-how, useful in boats and submarines. After which, they created their own company, Evans Products, to distribute their own creations. It was a commercial failure, but the company allowed them to meet the entrepreneur Herman Miller in 1946 - three years later, the Eames couple's furniture achieved its first success.
In 1949, Charles and Ray Eames organized an exhibition of their prefabricated house in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles. Designed as part of the Case Study Houses, with a light structure and a parallelepiped shape evoking Japanese architecture, the Eames House became a reference for this new method of construction.
It was in 1956 that Charles and Ray Eames experienced their greatest success as designers (six million copies sold worldwide): the Eames Lounge Chair, made up of three-dimensional molded plywood shells, today produced by the Vitra and Herman Miller companies.
