The J48 chair was designed by Poul M. Volther during the prolific year of 1951. Today considered as a classic of the golden age of Danish furniture design, its modern lines have ensured its durability and timeliness.

Poul M. Volther
Furniture architect Poul M. Volther (1923-2001) was one of the leading figures in Danish design. In 1950, after completing his training as a cabinetmaker, he succeeded furniture architect Børge Mogensen as head of the FDB Møbler design studio. Poul M. Volther quickly demonstrated his unique talent for developing high-quality furniture for mass production. True to the spirit of FDB Møbler, he helped design some of the most iconic pieces of furniture of the era, which went on to furnish many of the new and modern homes built as part of the development of the welfare state in the decades following the Second World War. Its simple, functionalist idiom was rooted in craftsmanship. Flexible furniture designed for everyday life. Furniture that wasn't designed for looks, but for comfort. One of his best-known pieces is the J46 radiant-back chair, dating from 1956, which is a graceful new take on a modern kitchen chair. Today, the J46 is the best-selling chair in Denmark, with a total of around 850,000 sold. Poul M. Volther was design director at FDB Møbler until 1955, after which he continued designing furniture, including the iconic Corona chair. He then became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
