To create the Tatou lamp collection, Patricia Urquiola was inspired by the construction of Japanese armor: a set of metal buckles cleverly attached with ribbons. This technic has been simplified to give life to a line of three-dimensional lampshades.

The name "Tatou" was chosen by Patricia Urquiola in reference to the animal of the same name, known for its thic armor-like skin consisting of overlapping plates. The lampshades of the Tatou collection play with the notions of matter and empty spaces, transparency and opacity. Pierced by a multitude of openings, they emit direct light, directed both downwards and upwards, and project delicate shadows onto the floors and walls.

Polycarbonate and methacrylate have been selected for their great interaction with light. The fruit of a long research, these reworked polymers acquire a jewel-like finish with an astonishing shine.

The Tatou collection is available in white and ochre grey and includes two sizes of pendants, a table lamp and a floor lamp.

Patricia Urquiola

Patricia Urquiola

Born in 1961 in Oviedo, Patricia Urquiola is one of the most recognized personalities in the design of objects and in architecture. After brilliant studies in Spain and Italy, Patricia Urquiola perfected her art with Achille Castiglioni, famous Italian designer. It was at this time that she discovered her passion for object design. In 1991, she began to find her own voice, taking over the management of De Padova, a furniture company. As a challenge driven woman, Patricia Urquiola opened her first design studio in 2001. Her fame grew as she designed new objects for Moroso, Fasem, Kartell, Alessi, Driade, Flos and many others.

The universe of Patricia Urquiola is one of ornamentation, sweetness and poetry, exuberance, refinement and sensuality ...

Voted Creator of the Year in 2008 at Now!, Design à Vivre, Patricia Urquiola knows a worldwide success: many exhibitions are dedicated to her throughout the world and her works are part of the permanent collections of the MoMA.
