Flowerpot lamp &Tradition – Verner Panton, 1968

The Flowerpot lamp is one of Danish designer Verner Panton's most famous creations. Designed in 1964, it was named in reference to the Flower Power that was triumphant at the time.

The simplicity and clarity of its lines have allowed the Flowerpot lamp to stand the test of time and become a design classic.

Its distinctive shade is made up of two pressed metal sheets in the shape of half-domes, providing directional yet glare-free lighting.

Verner Panton started as a painter before studying architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After an apprenticeship with architect/designer Arne Jacobsen, Panton continued his path into furniture and interior design, where he became famous for his avant-garde creations. Such as chairs without legs and a sofa placed vertically against the wall. In the 1960s and 1970s, his passion for designing entire environments led to immersive interiors featuring his hypnotic patterns and futuristic designs of furniture, lighting, wallpaper, posters and rugs.

Panton's innovative use of materials, colors and shapes earned him a reputation as a visionary. In 1998, the Queen of Denmark awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Dannebrog in recognition of his achievements.

The Flower Pot lamp became the emblem of the Flower Power peace movement during the 1960s. With its range of bright colors, it is just as synonymous with modernity as when it was launched in 1968. The Topan lamp by Panton is its little sister, a simple half-sphere that can also be configured into groups. “Panton’s provocative use of materials, geometric shapes and psychedelic colors sets him apart from the rest,” notes Martin Kornbek Hansen. “Our &tradition product catalog would not be complete without this endearing example from this radical design evangelist.”
