Vitra is a Swiss company that has been manufacturing design furniture since 1957. Vitra is particularly known for publishing furniture by Charles & Ray Eames, as well as several classics by Verner Panton, Eero Saarinen, Jean Prouvé, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard, as well as more recent works by contemporary designers like Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Hella Jongerius, Antonio Citterio, Jasper Morrison, Maarten Van Severen, etc.

VITRA – Mobilier, Luminaires et Décoration Design

The story of Vitra begins in 1953, when Swiss entrepreneur Willi Fehlbaum discovered furniture by Charles and Ray Eames in a store in New York. Immediately attracted, he contacted the publishing company Herman Miller. In 1957, Vitra began licensed production of the Herman Miller collection, which also included designs by George Nelson, Alexander Girard and Isamu Noguchi.

In the early 1960s, Willi Fehlbaum met Danish designer Verner Panton, looking for a manufacturer for a revolutionary cantilevered plastic chair project.

After years of research, the sculptural Panton chair was marketed in 1967, the first product developed by Vitra. It is and the first chair made entirely of plastic molded in one piece.

In 1984, the partnership with Herman Miller ended by mutual agreement and the production and distribution rights for furniture by Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson, as well as textiles by Alexander Girard, returned exclusively to Vitra for the Europe and the Middle East. Building on the success of the Panton Chair, Vitra will collaborate with other designers as publisher and manufacturer.

If Scandinavia Design, a specialist in Scandinavian design, welcomes Vitra, a Swiss company, it is firstly because in 2013, Vitra bought Artek, founded in 1935 by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino, gallery owner Maire Gullichsen and art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl - a brand that had been with Scandinavia Design since its beginnings. The collaboration therefore happened quite naturally.

But it is also, of course, because Vitra produces furniture by Verner Panton and Eero Saarinen and because Charles and Ray Eames, the souls of Vitra, were enormously inspired by Scandinavian design.

The aesthetic coherence is so natural, that the Finnish Marimekko, for example, constantly uses Vitra furniture to showcase its products.

Scandinavia Design has two showrooms where Vitra furniture is displayed.

The main one, located at the Prieuré between Angers and Saumur, hosts the main exhibition, backed by the stock and the logistics center. The showroom is easily accessible, with no parking problems - and the Loire flowing nearby offers the added bonus of magnificent landscapes for the visitor in the middle of the region's many wine estates.

The exhibition includes Vitra furniture, accessories and lighting - Come explore the collection, choose the colors of fabrics, leathers, touch the different materials, woods, etc. The team knows the vast Vitra catalog very well and will be able to help you to inform.

A second showroom, located in the city center of Angers, a stone's throw from the TGV station, intended to receive professional customers, by appointment.
