The Flowerpot VP3 is an iconic table lamp designed by Verner Panton in 1968 and produced by &Tradition. Part of the famous Flowerpot series, it reflects Panton's bold and playful aesthetic, inspired by the ‘Flower Power’ movement of the 1960s, with its mix of simple geometric shapes and vibrant colours.

Design and features

The Flowerpot VP3 retains the signature design of the series: two opposing hemispheres. The larger upper shade consists of a lacquered metal shell that encloses the bulb, while a smaller hemisphere below diffuses the light in a soft and directional manner, avoiding glare. This structure rests on a sturdy circular base, also made of metal, which ensures its stability.

Its dimensions are Ø 23 cm (lampshade) x H 50 cm, with a matching 2-metre-long textile cord. It uses an E27 bulb (not supplied) with a recommended maximum power of 40W or an LED alternative for lower consumption. Unlike the VP9, the VP3 is not portable or rechargeable: it is a wired lamp designed for fixed installation, often on a side table, desk or console.

The VP3 is available in a wide range of colours, true to Panton's spirit: from classic shades such as matt white or deep black to more daring options such as vermilion red, mustard or cobalt blue. Certain finishes, such as chrome or brass, add a sophisticated touch to this already iconic design.

Historical context

Released in 1968, the Flowerpot VP3 captures the optimism and creativity of the 1960s, a period marked by cultural revolutions and a fascination with the future (the moon landing was only a year away!). Verner Panton, with his experimental approach to design, wanted to break the codes of traditional furniture by focusing on organic shapes and colours that evoke emotions. The VP3 quickly found its place in the trendy interiors of the time, from cafés to domestic living rooms.

Manufacture and heritage by &Tradition

Reissued by &Tradition, a Danish brand dedicated to preserving Nordic design classics, the VP3 is carefully manufactured to respect Panton's original intention. The metal is carefully lacquered for a smooth and durable finish, and every detail – from the cord to the positioning of the elements – remains faithful to the original model. This lamp has become a symbol of Scandinavian design, combining functional minimalism and pop expressiveness.

Why is it popular?

The VP3 is appealing because of its versatility and timeless character. It brings a warm light and a touch of colour to any space, whether modern, retro or eclectic. Its height and slender silhouette make it a decorative object as well as a practical light fitting, perfect for a reading corner or a cosy atmosphere.

Difference with the VP9

Compared to the Flowerpot VP9 (portable and rechargeable), the VP3 is more static and imposing, designed as a fixed element of interior decoration. It does not have the mobility of the VP9, but it makes up for this with a more sculptural presence and a direct connection to the historical heritage of the series.
