The Collection 62 6-drawer chest, designed by Greta M. Grossman in 1952 and reissued by Danish publisher Gubi, is a masterpiece that combines functionality and bold aesthetics. Although created in 1952, it bears the name “62” because Grossman herself felt that this design was ten years ahead of its time, projecting a futuristic vision for the 1960s.

Design and features

The 6-drawer chest features Grossman's signature modernist aesthetic and bold mix of materials and shapes. It is made from American walnut, a noble wood with deep, rich tones, combined with a glossy black laminate top that contrasts with the warmth of the wood. This combination reflects the designer's taste for unexpected juxtapositions, a trait inspired by her Scandinavian influences and experience in the USA.

The structure rests on slender black powder-coated metal legs, finished with small solid wood spheres, a detail taken from the desk in the same collection. This touch gives the chest of drawers a visual lightness, as if it were floating slightly above the floor. With dimensions of 80 cm high, 160 cm long and 45 cm deep, it offers an imposing yet balanced presence, ideal for a living room, bedroom or office.

The six drawers are organized in two columns of three, offering generous, functional storage. Their symmetrical arrangement contrasts with the subtle asymmetry of other Collection 62 elements, such as the desk, creating harmony in diversity within the series. Minimalist handles, often integrated or discreet, underline the room's pure elegance.

Background and heritage

Greta M. Grossman, a Swedish architect and designer who moved to Los Angeles in 1940, left her mark on 20th-century design with her ability to blend Scandinavian functionalism with a touch of Californian glamour. The Collection 62 chest of drawers illustrates this synthesis: it is both practical and sculptural, serious and playful. Designed at a time when Grossman was collaborating with influential personalities and working from a studio on Rodeo Drive, this piece testifies to his pioneering status in what was then a predominantly male field.

The reissue by Gubi

Gubi, true to its mission of reviving modernist design treasures, has reissued the 6-drawer chest with meticulous care to preserve Grossman's original intent. Available in walnut with its characteristic black top, it blends perfectly into contemporary interiors while retaining its retro-futuristic aura. This reissue highlights the durability of Grossman's design, which remains relevant and desirable more than 70 years after its creation.
