The vase collection created by Alvar Aalto for Iittala is one of the most emblematic achievements of Finnish design and a timeless symbol of Scandinavian aesthetics.

Designed in 1936, the collection was the result of a competition organized by the Karhula-Iittala glassworks, which Aalto won with flying colors. Presented for the first time at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1937, it made an immediate impression with its revolutionary simplicity and organic forms, contrasting with the often ornate decorative objects of the time.

The centerpiece of this collection is the famous “Savoy vase”, named after the luxury Savoy restaurant in Helsinki, for which Aalto and his wife Aino Marsio designed a range of furniture and accessories.

The vase is distinguished by its fluid, asymmetrical lines, inspired, according to some interpretations, by the contours of Finnish lakes or, according to a more personal anecdote, by the folds of a Sami woman's leather dress (as suggested by the original title of Aalto's sketches, “Eskimoerindens Skinnbuxa” or “The Leather Breeches of the Eskimo Woman”). Aalto himself never strictly defined his object as a vase, leaving the user free to imagine its use - an approach that reflects his philosophy of functional, humane design.

Each vase in the Alvar Aalto collection is handcrafted, mouth-blown in the Iittala factory in Finland, a process that demands great mastery: seven craftsmen, twelve stages and around 30 hours of work are required to create a single piece. This technique ensures that each vase is unique, with subtle variations that add to its charm.

The collection is available in a wide range of sizes (from 95 mm to 270 mm high, for example) and colors, from classic shades such as transparent, opal white or green, to rarer limited editions such as turquoise.

Today, the Alvar Aalto collection remains a global icon, exhibited in museums such as MoMA in New York, and continues to embody a perfect blend of beauty, functionality and exceptional craftsmanship. It illustrates Aalto's vision of design that blends harmoniously into everyday life, yet transcends time. Whether used to hold flowers or simply as a work of art, these vases continue to captivate with their timeless elegance.

The furniture, lighting and objects he has created derive organically from his architectural work.

Alvar Aalto's singular aesthetic has played a decisive role in defining Finnish design and making it known throughout the world. The foundations of his aesthetic are based on a harmonious relationship with nature, beauty-conscious functionalism, extreme attention to detail and ingenious use of materials.

Alvar Aalto's creations were soon exhibited in museums around the world, including New York's Museum of Modern Art. His reputation there began in 1930, with the presentation at the New York World's Fair of the Savoy vase, whose undulating design, as lively and fluid as the Finnish lakes that inspired it, caused a sensation.
