The C-Chair Outdoor, designed by Marcel Gascoin between 1947 and 1949 and published by Gubi, is a contemporary reinterpretation of Gascoin's iconic chair, adapted for outdoor spaces. Part of the Gascoin collection, it embodies the functional elegance and modernist aesthetic that define his approach. Made from solid teak with a polyethylene fiber weave, this chair combines durability and refinement, ideal for moments of outdoor conviviality.

Design and features

The C-Chair Outdoor retains the clean lines of its original model, with a compact structure and tapered back legs that give it a light, slender look. Its dimensions - 41 cm wide, 53 cm deep and 81 cm high, with a seat height of 48 cm - make it the perfect chair to accompany an outdoor dining table.

The frame is made from weather-resistant solid teak, while the seat and back are woven from extruded polyethylene fiber, imitating natural hyacinth for long-lasting comfort. This weave, available in neutral shades, contrasts with the warm hue of teak, which can be maintained with oil to keep its honey-gold shine or left to patina naturally to a silvery gray.

Background and heritage

Marcel Gascoin designed the C-Chair in 1947 to meet the needs of modest post-war housing in France, where space was at a premium. Influenced by his childhood in Le Havre, surrounded by maritime designs, he infused this chair with an ingenious simplicity and thoughtful ergonomics that became his signature.

A member of the Union des Artistes Modernes alongside Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, he left his mark on French modernism with his democratic approach to design. The Outdoor version, adapted by Gubi, extends this heritage by projecting it into a contemporary context, responding to the growing demand for elegant, hard-wearing outdoor furniture.

The re-edition by Gubi

Gubi has re-edited the C-Chair Outdoor with meticulous care, using certified plantation teak and UV- and moisture-resistant polyethylene fiber, thus modernizing Gascoin's design while respecting its original spirit. Launched in the Gascoin collection alongside pieces such as the 1949 F-Chair Outdoor, this chair illustrates Gubi's commitment to preserving classics while adapting them to today's uses. Its sturdy construction and timeless aesthetic make it a perfect addition to terraces or gardens, combining Gascoin's modernist heritage with Danish expertise in sustainable, refined design.
