The CH20 dining chair, also known as the ‘Elbow Chair’, is a creation by Hans J. Wegner designed in 1956 for Carl Hansen & Søn.
Although the chair was not mass-produced at the time of its design, it was relaunched in 2005 to celebrate Wegner's visionary talent and has since enjoyed great success, thanks in particular to its great comfort.

The CH20 is a stackable chair with a compact and elegant design. Its characteristic backrest, short and curved horizontally, resembles an elbow (hence its nickname ‘Elbow’), offering ergonomic support while remaining minimalist. The round and slightly inclined legs add a touch of lightness and dynamism.
Made of solid wood, usually oak or walnut, it is available with various finishes (oiled, soap-finished or lacquered). The seat is upholstered and covered in fabric or leather, which contrasts with Wegner's all-wood or woven designs, such as the CH24 or CH22.
It measures approximately 54 cm wide, 47 cm deep and 73 cm high, with a seat height of 46 cm, ideal for use at a table. Its stackable design (up to four chairs) makes it a practical choice for small spaces.
The curved back and padded seat offer optimal comfort for a dining chair, while its compact shape makes it versatile.
Designed in 1956, the CH20 remained a prototype for decades, perhaps reflecting a period when Wegner was exploring more utilitarian and modern forms. It was not until 2005, long after Wegner's death in 2007, that Carl Hansen & Søn decided to put it into production, based on the original drawings and models. This revival is a testament to the enduring relevance of Wegner's creations and the company's commitment to preserving his legacy.
The CH20 Elbow Chair is now appreciated for its functional simplicity and refined aesthetics, typical of mid-century Scandinavian design. It fits perfectly into contemporary or classic interiors, whether around a dining table or as an occasional chair. Its stackability adds a rare practical dimension to such a carefully designed piece, making it popular with lovers of furniture that is both beautiful and useful.
