The CH22 is a lounge chair with a solid wood frame, often in oak or walnut, with organic, flowing lines. Its backrest and seat are made of hand-woven paper cord, a signature Wegner material, which adds a warm texture and natural comfort. The slightly curved armrests and tapered legs give it an elegant and welcoming look.
The frame is made of solid wood, available in various finishes (oiled, soapy or lacquered), while the paper cord weave – requiring around 120 metres per armchair – is meticulous craftsmanship. This durable and environmentally friendly material is typical of Wegner's designs from this period.
Despite its minimalist appearance, the CH22 offers excellent support thanks to the angle of the backrest and the flexibility of the woven seat, which moulds to the body.
Presented in 1950 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Fair, the CH22 was one of the first designs that Wegner created for Carl Hansen & Søn, alongside the famous CH24 (Wishbone Chair). Inspired by the traditional shapes of chairs with ladder backs and Danish craftsmanship, it embodies the organic modernism of the time. When it was released, it was praised for its balance between aesthetics and functionality.
Although less well known than some of Wegner's other classics, such as the CH24, the CH22 has been brought back into production by Carl Hansen & Søn in recent years, true to the original design. Each piece is handmade in Denmark, using traditional methods. Today, this armchair appeals to lovers of mid-century design for its timeless look and discreet comfort, blending in equally well with modern or vintage interiors.
