Hee Welling (born 1974) is an award-winning furniture designer. As well as being exhibited at fairs and museums around the world, his products can be found in a wide range of interiors, from the Oslo Opera House to the Australian Parliament.
Raised in the Danish countryside, Hee Welling has a predilection for nature that is reflected in the honest minimalism of his pieces. Each of his designs is characterised by a strong visual identity, driven by clean lines and simple silhouettes.
Welling works with a wide range of materials, combining wood and metals with non-natural elements such as plastic.
Although resolutely modern, Welling's work is part of the wider Scandinavian design tradition. His pieces are driven by a belief in function as the cornerstone of furniture design. Turning to old masters such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner, he seeks to continue their legacy with carefully crafted pieces that prioritise logic. No detail, Welling believes, should be superfluous. Instead, he works through an intuitive design process to ensure that each of his pieces is optimised for its highest purpose.
Welling attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for his bachelor's degree, with a semester at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. He then obtained a Master's degree in furniture design from the Academy. In 2003, he set up his eponymous studio in Copenhagen.
