The Kartio collection, designed by Finnish designer Kaj Franck for Iittala, is an icon of Nordic design, celebrated for its functional simplicity and timeless aesthetic. Created in 1958, it embodies the principles of Scandinavian modernism: clean forms, everyday utility and beauty accessible to all. Kaj Franck, often referred to as “the conscience of Finnish design”, left his mark on Iittala's history with this series, which remains a pillar of the brand today.
Kaj Franck conceived Kartio at a time when he was seeking to democratize design, in reaction to excessively ornate or elitist objects. His aim was to create universal, practical and affordable pieces, while retaining an understated elegance. The name “Kartio” means “cone” in Finnish, a nod to the basic geometric shape of glasses, which widen slightly upwards from a solid base.
Franck firmly believed that everyday objects should be stripped of all superfluity to reveal their essence. With Kartio, he eliminated unnecessary decoration, concentrating on clean lines and intuitive ergonomics. In his own words, “I want to create objects that are so simple that they become indispensable.” The Kartio collection reflects this philosophy brilliantly.
The Kartio collection mainly comprises drinking glasses, but has expanded over time to include carafes. The glasses are distinguished by their slightly flared conical shape, offering a natural grip and perfect stability. Available in two sizes (from 21 cl to 40 cl), they are designed for a variety of uses: water, juice, wine or even as small containers.
The color palette is another emblematic Kartio feature. Originally produced in transparent glass, the collection has been enriched by subtle hues such as blue, green, grey and linen. These delicate, refined colors reflect Iittala's mastery of the art of glass, and add an aesthetic dimension without compromising the simplicity of the design. Made from molded glass, Kartio objects are sturdy and suitable for everyday use, while retaining a finesse that makes them elegant.
Kartio is often considered one of Kaj Franck's most influential works, alongside his famous Teema collection. It embodies the ideals of Scandinavian design in the 1950s: durability, functionality and beauty without ostentation. At a time when disposable objects were beginning to emerge, Franck was advocating sustainable creations, capable of crossing generations - a message that still resonates today in a context of more conscious consumption.
The collection won several awards, including at the Milan Triennale in 1957, where Franck received a Grand Prix for his overall work, of which Kartio was an integral part.
Kaj Franck (1911-1989) is known as the “conscience of Finnish design.” Franck grew up in a world with elaborate dining services to sparse stone dishes. During his significant career, Franck asserted himself between the two extremes and profoundly changed our understanding of tableware. He utilized serial production to produce versatile, practical dishware at a reasonable price. Besides social consciousness, Franck’s distinct career was guided by the desire to seek the essential. He studied basic forms endlessly with special focus on proportions.
