The Nappula pot collection, designed by Swedish designer Matti Klenell for the Finnish brand Iittala, is an iconic series that perfectly embodies the Nordic design philosophy, combining form, function and timeless aesthetics.
The story of the Nappula collection begins with a visit by Matti Klenell to the glass museum in Nuutajärvi, Finland. There, he was intrigued by an antique table with unusually wide, “swollen” legs. This singular form, at once awkward and charming, became the starting point for his inspiration. Initially developed for candleholders, this distinctive silhouette was later adapted to create a range of plant pots, expanding the Nappula universe.
Nappula pots are distinguished by their fluid, curved silhouette, composed of two main parts: a rounded base and a slender foot that elevates the plant. This combination creates a dynamic visual effect while retaining the minimalist simplicity typical of Nordic design. Made from ceramic with a glossy finish, these pots are available in a variety of sizes and colors, enabling a wide range of decorative arrangements. Classic shades include white, beige and dark green, but more recent colors such as aqua and lilac have been introduced to enrich the palette.
The design of Nappula pots is not only aesthetic: it's also functional. Their raised shape enhances plants, whether cacti or hanging baskets, by providing an elegant setting for them. Some models also include a matching saucer, adding a practical touch for maintenance.
The Nappula collection has become a classic of modern Nordic design. Appreciated for its versatility, it is equally at home in minimalist interiors as in more eclectic settings. Alone or grouped together, Nappula pots bring a touch of nature to interiors while remaining decorative objects in their own right, even without plants. They are also considered ideal gifts for occasions such as housewarmings or birthdays, especially when accompanied by plants.
Matti Klenell (b.1972) is a Swedish designer known for his continual explorations into the Nordic design philosophy of form and function. Much like craftsmen during the dawn of industrialism, Klenell seeks to obtain the richest artistic expression within the possible limitations of the production process. His goal is to bring his creations to life by giving them character and personality. His multi-faceted approach to design allows him to work within many platforms including one-man exhibitions of his art glassware. Klenell has received much recognition for his work including the Red Dot Design Award for the Lempi drinking glass that he created for Iittala.
