Serpentine in shape, beautifully balanced and shining like a jewel, Gianfranco Frattini's Aspide table lamp is both an eminently practical piece of industrial design and an irresistibly playful design gesture. First developed in 1970, the Aspide is unlike any other lamp, yet beautifully expressive of its time.
The name Aspide comes from the Italian word for "aspic". The sparkling chrome coating gives it a mirror-like surface that reflects the lamp's light. The body of the lamp is made of large curved iron tubes attached to a steel shaft, which allows the neck and head to rotate continuously around their axis up to 350ΒΊ, to an integrated stop. This simple, intuitive mechanism adjusts both the aesthetics and function of the lamp, giving the user the ability to easily control the light in their space.
The Aspide table lamp has been designed as a work or reading lamp, which can be turned towards the wall to create a softer ambient light.Β

Gianfranco Frattini
From doorknobs and jewelry to homes and hotels, Gianfranco Frattini has left an indelible mark on modern Italian design over his 50-year career. Experienced in creating interiors for public spaces such as restaurants and nightclubs, he appreciated the importance of modulating light to create nuances in an interior - forming areas that are both functional and warm, with a subtle radiance that contributes to the atmosphere and sense of place. When he passed away in 2004 in his beloved Milan, Frattini left behind one of the richest and most varied legacies of any 20th-century designer, including award-winning furniture - both indoor and outdoor - modern icons and striking interiors that shaped the taste of the age.
