GB Lounge – Gijs Bakker, 1972

Dutch industrial designer Gijs Bakker had already made a solid reputation for his aluminum jewelery when he came across a design competition one morning in 1972 organized by Dunlop, the famous manufacturer of foam rubber.

As soon as he was inspired, Gijs Bakker grabbed a piece of foam, bent it 90 degrees and embedded it all in a thin metal structure that was reminiscent of the shape of his jewelry: thus was born the GB Lounge, a seat modular lounge that discreet connectors allow to assemble to transform it into a sofa.

"I'm so happy that the GB Lounge has survived," Bakker enthuses about its reissue by Karakter, which takes full advantage of the know-how of Cassina, the undisputed master of high-end upholstered sofas. "I had nicknamed it Levi's Chair: like a pair of loved jeans, the GT Lounge seemed to me the perfect antidote to the stiffness of my parents' generation."

To adapt its comfort a little to contemporary times, less fond of ultra-low seats than the generation of Gijs Bakker, Karakter has nevertheless added small discreet feet, which raise it slightly from the ground for more comfort.

Gijs Bakker

Gijs Bakker (1942) is a multidisciplinary Dutch designer, lecturer and one of the original founders of Droog design.

Through a philosophy of “conceptual design in context”, his studio in Amsterdam follows a holistic design approach in which heart, mind and substance come together.

Gijs Bakker and his studio has conceived numerous design icons, and Bakker’s work is represented in museums and private collections all over the world.

As a teacher and lecturor he urges students, artists and designers to find their individuality as designers. Something he himself has managed to do very well.
