Plexi – Karakter – Angelo Mangiarotti, 1962

Angelo Mangiarotti designed the Plexi lamp back in 1962, when it was produced in small quantities in an impressive 80 cm version. Karakter has reissued it with a more user-friendly 45 cm version.

The Plexi lamp can be used on its own or in groups to create chandeliers to fill large spaces. Its long version is ideal for large halls and high ceilings in hotels, restaurants, lobbies and corporate premises.

The Plexiglas conducts the light from one end to the other, diffusing the light through the lower end of each cylinder, but also producing a diffused light along the body of the lamp.

The lower end of the cylinder has been sandblasted to generate a wider cone of light beneath the lamp.

Angelo Mangiarotti

Italian architect, sculptor and designer Angelo Mangiarotti was born in Milan in 1921. Mangiarotti is quoted as saying “Happiness comes from honesty”.

A quote that alludes to his holistic approach to design, rooted in the firm conviction that architecture was a practical discipline and industrial design was the expression of refined craftsmanship.

He wanted each individual material to be respected and used appropriately and honestly. Beyond his many architectural feats, Mangiarotti's work includes a wide range of creative projects from sculpture to products and lighting.

Over the course of his career, he has held lecturing positions at several renowned design and architecture schools in Italy and abroad, won numerous design and architecture awards, and his work has been included in exhibitions and collections at some of the world's leading art and design institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and Gallery MA in Tokyo.
