It's hard to believe that Marcel Breuer was already thinking about home offices and laptops, because the S 285 desk in tubular steel fits so naturally into the modern way of living and working.

Designed in 1935, the S 285 desk perfectly reflects the programmatic ambition of the Bauhaus to unite art and technology in a single unit. A cabinetmaker by training, Breuer drew on both his knowledge of tubular steel and his experience of interior architecture.

The top and storage units in painted or stained wood blend perfectly with the tubular steel frame, which has a single curved line through which the wooden elements appear to levitate. This piece of furniture, with its pared-down forms and balanced proportions, bears witness to a key period in contemporary history known as "New Objectivity". Thonet continues to produce different versions of this iconic model.

Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer was born in 1902 in PĂ©cs, Hungary. He began studying art, but chose to study at the Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar from 1920 to 1924. From 1925 to 1928, Breuer was head of the carpentry workshop at the Bauhaus, which had meanwhile moved to Dessau. During this period, he was strongly influenced by Constructivism and De Stijl, and developed a number of pieces of furniture in tubular steel that became all the rage. In 1928, Breuer moved to Berlin and concentrated on interior design. In 1931, he travelled extensively before starting work on several pieces of aluminium furniture in Switzerland in 1932. In 1935, Breuer moved to London, where he worked as an architect. In 1937, he was awarded a chair in architecture at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he later opened an architectural practice with Walter Gropius. Breuer opened his own studio in New York in 1946 and completed numerous projects in Europe and the United States. He is considered one of the most important architects and designers of modernism. Marcel Breuer died on 1 July 1981 in New York.
